Go ahead, step in. The water is great.
I didn't realize how many website-building platforms there were for building a career portfolio. I dove right into a few recommended sites as well platforms used by others in my field.
What is my main goal? I want a place to display my digital projects, but I also wanted to be able to tell a story about myself. I want to look professional, talented, and not be stagnant.
Right away, I could eliminate the platform Google Sites. It's actually quite cool looking and provides a quick and easy way to pull together a portfolio, but its tools are limited with no way to include a blog or eventually personalize with a domain name. Then there is the website builder is Nicepage Builder, which is also made for the user with no code experience. Nicepage has a lot of great template options, but the downfall for me is that you have to download an app to your desktop, and to publish to the web requires an extra step by exporting to an external site.
I've used WordPress frequently, but many of its affordable templates don't have the modern look I'm looking for, so I've decided to try the website builder called, Wix. It's easy to use. I'm also excited about the templates. The templates offer a sleek look for a portfolio as well as the option to create a blog.
Who is my audience? Well, obviously I want to attract job offers, but I want to make sure I'm using the right language and words that target roles or opportunities I would be interested in.
What's next?
Create a strategy map out my portfolio. Almost like a writing assignment, I had to just jump into a mapping graphic and started mapping. This is the direction of the site design and what content I want to include. There should be an actual downloadable resume somewhere on this page, right?
My map has obvious components, like my statement about myself. Who I am? There are digital content projects that should encompass my writing, video, and podcast projects. I've added Social Media as its own component. The blog is how I will tell a story about myself. What about other websites, work projects, my published stories, or volunteer work?
Ultimately, my portfolio mapping is a start.
There are a lot of moving parts and pages that I can consider as I move forward and build my portfolio site. It will be a work-in-progress.
