Working on a new podcast to address how imposter syndrome might invade your mind as an adult returning to college. I've been an adult part-time student for a while, so this is something I've thought about. Here are the rules I wrote up, which are in jest, but seriously, what would you do?
Phrases or things to avoid saying when creating small talk with your fellow (much younger) classmates.
Any anecdote that begins with “Well, my husband….”
The infamous phrase: “When I was your age….”
Try not to remind your classmates that you also have kids their age.
Avoid asking them what they’re doing this weekend. If they want you to know, they’ll share.
Don’t tell them what you’re doing this weekend. They probably don’t care.
Don’t add too many pop culture references from the 70s, 80s,, and probably even the early 90s into your conversations. Yes, the professor may get it, but this may not work in your favor.
Don’t ask them to follow you on Twitter or Tiktok or [insert social platform here].
